Os Metapīnum (Rhônemũndung) “ between den Wassern”; compare Illyr. locative Metu-barbis “ between Sũmpfen” (in the Save); in Ä tolien VN Μετάπιοι (hellenisiert Μεσσάπιοι) etc., O.Ice. með(r) “with, between “, Goth. miÞ, O.E. mið, O.H.G. with(i). C. me-ĝhri-(s) in Arm. merj “by” (the final sound receive in merjenam “nähere mich”) = Gk. μέχρι(ς) “bis”; contains den locative of words for “hand” (see above S. 447); zero grade IE*m̥-ĝhri-(s) in Gk. ἄχρι(ς) ds. D. Unclear are Gk. arkad. μέστε, Cret. kyren. μέστα “bis”, Hom. μέσφα, Thess. μέσποδι etc. Maybe Alb. (*me-) me “with”.
